Factors Affecting the Quotation of Main Steel Structure Works

Steel columns, steel beams and steel roof trusses are key components of steel structure buildings. Their prices are affected by various cost factors and market fluctuations, mainly including material cost, fabrication process, coating, transportation and installation.

Steel prices are influenced by steel grade, market supply and demand, component specifications, as well as steel brand and quality. Raw material prices rise when supply is tight and fall when supply is abundant. Larger component specifications and higher material consumption will lead to higher raw material costs.

Fabrication costs are influenced by working procedures, welding techniques, types of connectors, quantity of bolts and installation difficulty. The adoption of high-precision CNC equipment, plasma/laser cutting, premium welding materials and high-strength bolts will push up fabrication expenses. By contrast, conventional equipment, standard processes and ordinary bolts help reduce costs.

On-site installation costs depend on component weight, lifting height, site conditions, lifting equipment, working environment, labor costs and auxiliary tools. Heavier components, greater lifting heights, poor site conditions and extensive high-altitude operations require the rental of large-scale equipment and additional safety measures, resulting in a sharp increase in installation and lifting costs. Costs are lower for projects with open sites and low-level operations.

Fire retardant coating is also required for some projects. The quotation is affected by coating type, designed coating thickness, coverage area and application times. Ultra-thin fire retardant coating has a higher unit price, and thicker coating and more application times will further increase relevant expenses.

For overseas projects, transportation constitutes a major expense. The quotation shall take into account the volume, weight and overall dimensions of components, transportation distance, delivery methods and whether over-dimensional transportation is involved. Large-sized components are likely to fall into the category of over-dimensional cargo, and improper transportation solutions will push up costs. Longer distances and more transshipments will also result in higher freight charges.

Shipment

In conclusion, the quotation of main steel structure works is determined by a combination of various costs and external conditions. In practical quotation work, overall consideration shall be given to project design requirements, on-site working conditions, market trends and transportation arrangements to work out reasonable and accurate quotations.
